When Shanghai resident John Chen bought Amercia.com in 2009, he had no idea Mitt Romney would make it a household name. He's just a fan of America, and decided the domain name—his for just $100—was close enough. "For us, Amercia is so near to America, and it makes us feel so close to the USA and it also reminds us that we must work hard to get near to our soul land," he tells Mashable.
Now, someone from that "soul land" is probably going to take it off his hands, for a bunch of money. Within 24 hours of Romney's spelling flub surfacing, Chen received four inquiries from people looking to buy the domain. The appraisal site EstiBot.com says it's now worth $12,000, but Chen says he'd let it go for "something like" $6,000 or $7,000. The money would go, appropriately enough, to help send his son to school in Amercia. Erm, we mean America. (More Shanghai stories.)
