Romney: Marriage Is Between a Man and a Woman

Mitt Romney didn't get very political in his commencement speech at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University today, but his brief reference to gay marriage earned his loudest ovation, reports the Washington Post. “Culture—what you believe, what you value, how you live—matters,” Romney said. “As fundamental as these principles are, they may become topics of democratic debate from time to time. So it is today with the enduring institution of marriage. Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman.”

The rest of the speech, though, was mainly about faith and spirituality in America, notes USA Today. "Central to America’s rise to global leadership is our Judeo-Christian tradition, with its vision of the goodness and possibilities of every life," said Romney, who did not explicitly mention his own Mormonism. The speech was closely watched because it allowed Romney to directly address evangelicals, a group that has been reluctant to embrace him. (But not for long?)
