John Edwards knew about the hush money being funneled to his pregnant mistress, and even lied about it to the wife of aide Andrew Young, who later claimed he was the child's father, testified Cheri Young today. "I heard Mr. John Edwards tell me on the phone that he checked with the campaign lawyers and that this was legal," said Cheri Young, who said she questioned the presidential candidate about the money, which came from a wealthy donor and was deposited into an account controlled by the Youngs, reports the AP.

Cheri Young was reluctant to take the money, but says she did so because of the danger to her husband's job if Edwards' affair were to be made public. "I cannot tell you how disgusted I was. Why me? This was my husband's fight. ... Now I had to fix it," she said. Edwards faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all six counts of campaign finance violations. (More John Edwards stories.)
