When Trayvon Martin knocked him to the ground, George Zimmerman told police, he forgot for a moment that he even had a gun. It was only when Martin noticed the pistol that he pulled it from its belt holster and fired a single round into the teenager's chest. "OK, you got it," Martin said twice, before falling to the ground. Or at least, that's what a law-enforcement source tells the Daily Beast, in the most detailed leak yet of Zimmerman's account of the event.
Even after Martin fell, Zimmerman said he didn't realize the youth was seriously injured, so he lunged on top of him, which is where Sanford police found him moments later. They hauled him to police headquarters and, according to the source, questioned him thoroughly, saying they didn't believe his story. At one point, they had him lie on his back and shout things heard in the 911 call, to see if the voice heard crying for help was his or Martin's.
