Ovechkin Good, But Not Enough, in Detroit Debut

Alexander Ovechkin's first game in Detroit kept him in the running for leading goal-scorer, but it was fellow Russian Pavel Datsyuk who took over the game with three assists and a decisive goal in the shootout. Tomas Holmstrom capitalized on two of Datsyuk's masterful dimes, although he also inadvertently banked in one for Washington's Jeff Schulz.

Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg had his 24th goal halfway through the second, or about 20 minutes after Ovechkin scored his 24th; they are tied for second in the league. Goalies Dominik Hasek (Wings) and Olie Kolzig (Capitals) each stopped 27 of 30 shots in regulation, but Kolzig was burned in the shootout, going 0-for-3. (More NHL stories.)
