Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain is likely out for the season and possibly done with baseball after suffering a bizarre and gruesome ankle injury, reports the Daily News. He damaged his right ankle while playing with his young son and lost so much blood that his life was in danger, a team insider tells the newspaper. "I believe it was a trampoline," says GM Brian Cashman. The gruesome part: The bone pierced the skin, ala Joe Theisman.
"This makes it not only a career-threatening injury, but a limb-threatening injury," says one orthopedic surgeon, who wasn't involved with the 26-year-old's care. Much depends on the next few months. Asked if Chamberlain's career might be over, Cashman replied, "My heart and my gut tells me no, that's not the case. But at the same time, I don't want to spew information that I'm not really in a position to talk about." (More New York Yankees stories.)
