Two newspaper heavyweights made their endorsements today ahead of the Iowa and New Hampshire voting, and John McCain came out tops in both. The Boston Globe and the Des Moines Register each endorsed McCain as the Republican nominee. The Globe chose Barack Obama among Democrats, while the Register gave the nod to Hillary Clinton.

McCain "has done more than his share to transcend partisanship and promote an honest discussion of the problems facing the United States," the Globe wrote. The paper said Obama had "an intuitive sense of the wider world, with all its perils and opportunities." In choosing Clinton, the Register said "readiness to lead sets her apart from a constellation of possible stars in her party." (More John McCain stories.)
