Dartmouth College is in a tizzy over allegations of some seriously sick hazing at one of its fraternities. Former Sigma Alpha Epsilon member Andrew Lohse caused an uproar with a school newspaper column describing how pledges were pressured to swim in kiddie pools filled with puke and rotten food. The Ivy League college has since charged 27 frat members, including Lohse himself, with hazing pledges last fall, AP finds.
The fraternity's president says traditions "deemed problematic" were long gone by last fall, and no current frat members were members when Lohse was a pledge. The college's dean denies suggestions that the recent charges were brought merely to counter bad press. "When we get detailed, specific information regarding hazing or any other violation of our code, we act," she said. "This isn't a witch hunt, nor are we sitting on our hands." It's not clear what penalties the students will face. (More Dartmouth stories.)
