After being trapped for more than a week in Homs, a pair of French journalists have been smuggled out of Syria. "Edith Bouvier and William Daniels are currently safe on Lebanese territory and will within moments be under the protection of our embassy in Beirut," Nicolas Sarkozy told reporters, according to the New York Times. Syrian rebels saw to the journalists' escape after the Red Cross was unable to secure Bouvier's medical evacuation; she was seriously wounded in the attack that killed Marie Colvin of the US and Rémi Ochlik of France last week.
The rebels were thwarted in their first effort to get the French journalists, as well as Brit Paul Conroy and Spanish journalist Javier Espinosa, to Lebanon. Conroy and Espinosa were delivered to safety earlier this week. The two slain journalists' bodies have been recovered in the Baba Amr area of Homs by Syrian officials in what the government called "a great humanitarian effort." After Syria performs DNA tests, the bodies of Colvin and Ochlik will be given to the Polish embassy, the AFP reports. (More Edith Bouvier stories.)
