A gas pipeline running from central Syria to its Lebanese border was blown up at dawn today, and state-run media is blaming "an armed terrorist group," reports the AP. It's the latest in a string of such explosions since the beginning of Syria's uprising, which the government has continually blamed on terrorists. Meanwhile, some 62 people were reported killed in continuing violence yesterday.
Violence looks to be approaching the capital. Yesterday, pro-regime tanks shelled rebel-held areas near Damascus, and activists today said they had heard gunfire and explosions in the suburbs of the capital. Recently, opposition forces have been appearing nearby; the AP calls their presence so close to the tightly controlled capital "astonishing," and suggests the government may be laying a trap. Some 5,400 have now been killed since the beginning of the uprising, according to the UN, with 150 killed since last Thursday. (More Syria stories.)
