Hundreds gathered today in a huge Tucson cathedral to remember the horrifying day a year ago when Gabrielle Giffords was severely wounded in a gunman's rampage, the AP reports. A pastor read the names of six people killed in the shooting, inviting survivors and family members to place red roses in a vase at the foot of the aisle. "We remember, we remember, we remember with grateful hearts," chanted the mourners.
The remembrance began this morning in Tucson when bells were rung at 10:11 a.m., the time when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire during a congressional meet-and-greet that also wounded 13. Last year "there was a lot of anger," says a former Giffords intern. "And now it's, 'How can we heal and move forward?'" President Obama called Giffords today to give his and Michelle's support, the White House says. Giffords, who visited locations related to the shooting today, plans to lead a candlelight vigil in Tucson tonight in a rare public appearance, AFP reports. (More Gabrielle Giffords shooting stories.)
