Argentina's popular president and her followers have gotten some surprise good news: She never had cancer despite last month's diagnosis, reports the BBC. Cristina Fernandez was thought to have thyroid cancer and had the gland removed this week, but post-op analysis revealed it had no cancerous cells, notes Reuters. The news means she won't have to undergo chemo, though it does shoot a big hole in Hugo Chavez's US-is-spreading-cancer conspiracy.
"The original diagnosis has been modified," said a government spokesman. "The presence of cancer cells was discarded." Fernandez, 58, is out of the hospital and recovering at home. Loyal supporters of the president, who won an easy re-election in October, had camped outside the hospital in Pilar to support her during the operation. (More Argentina stories.)
