Gunman Dead in Church Attack
Law enforcement officials swarm New Life Church on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007 in Colorado Springs, Colo. A gunman killed two staff members at a missionary training center early Sunday in Arvada after being told he couldn't spend the night, and about 12 hours later four people were shot outside New Life Church...   (Associated Press)

The gunman who opened fire at a Colorado megachurch today killed one and wounded four before being fatally shot by a security guard, CNN reports. Police Chief Richard Myers called the guard at New Life Church "a courageous security staff member who probably saved many lives today." Some of the victims' injuries were life-threatening, Myers said. He added that "suspicious devices" were found on the church grounds.

Police have not linked the incident to a shooting at a missionary training center earlier near Denver. Two died and two were wounded there after an assailant opened fire and fled the scene. The two shootings occurred roughly 80 miles and 12 hours apart, and police have not ruled out a connection. No motive is known in either attack. (More church shootings stories.)
