Apparently, certain conservatives really, really don't want to see Mitt Romney win the nomination. Politico reports that an influential group is holding an emergency meeting next weekend in Texas in order to agree on a "consensus" Republican candidate. Prominent conservatives including Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, former chairman of the American Family Association Don Wildmon, and former presidential candidate Gary Bauer are hosting.

The invitation to the meeting, sent this morning, notes that the purpose of the private meeting is "to unite and to come to a consensus on which Republican presidential candidate or candidates to support, or which not to support." A similar guest list was invited to a previous private meeting with Rick Perry, but his candidacy no longer looks so promising, and movement conservatives are now concerned that Romney will win if votes are split between Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. Politico notes that Santorum may be their best choice; click to see how Gingrich feels about teaming up with him. (More Newt Gingrich stories.)
