Strong Quakes Rock Christchurch

A series of strong earthquakes shook Christchurch, New Zealand, today, 10 months after a major quake killed 182 people and destroyed much of the downtown. A 5.8 quake was followed by a 5.3 quake minutes later, and a 6.0 quake an hour after that, along with many smaller ones, the BBC reports. A few dozen people suffered minor injuries, but the only major damage so far appears to have been to the nerves of the city's residents.

"There are a lot of Christchurch people who have relatives around other parts of New Zealand—I think they'll be spending Christmas with them," a city councilman tells the New Zealand Herald. "It was a really big shock because I think a lot of people thought they were all over. You can see a lot of people are quite visibly shaken. You can see they're thinking, 'Oh, here we go again.'"
