Newt Gingrich is clearly no big fan of the judicial branch, a point he brought up during Thursday's debate, emphasized yesterday, and drove home today. In a call with reporters yesterday, Gingrich said that if he became president, he would ignore any Supreme Court rulings that infringed upon his authority as commander in chief and would be willing to impeach "activist judges" or abolish certain courts. "Are we forced for a lifetime to keep someone on the bench who is so radically anti-American that they are a threat to the fabric of the country?" he asked. And he took his attack on the courts to the next level today on Face the Nation.
Bob Schieffer asked the former House speaker, "One of the things you say is that if you don’t like what a court has done, that Congress should subpoena the judge and bring him before Congress and hold a Congressional hearing ... how would you enforce that? Would you send the Capitol Police down to arrest him?" Gingrich didn't back down, responding, "If you had to. Or you’d instruct the Justice Department to send a US Marshal."
