Report Finds Theft, Fraud Among Mail Carriers

The Washington Post checks out a watchdog report about the nation's 574,000 mail carriers and finds some doozies:

• A Maryland carrier admitted to burning piles of mail in an abandoned lot and was sentenced to six months in jail.
• A carrier in Cincinnati stole $10,000 in cash and $1,000 in gift cards and pleaded guilty to mail theft.

• A Texas carrier submitted travel-reimbursement requests for 480 medical visits, but actually went to only 13. She got three years' probation and had to repay $172,000.
• Another in Michigan submitted 20 false injury claims over 16 years—and sold real estate to boot while on the job. He had to repay money and can no longer work for the feds.
• The report also highlights the good, including carriers who tracked down a burglar, rescued two people from a car submerged in a pool, and rescued an elderly person from a burning home.
