Traveling by boat is just so ... pedestrian. For those looking for a more luxurious—and unusual—way to travel by sea, Florida's JetLev Technologies has just the thing: a $99,500 water-powered jet pack (pay another $3,500 for a premium color). The company tells the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that it has sold about 70 of the machines so far, the majority to companies that charge tourists, in some cases, $250 per 45-minute flight. "Most people are up and flying on their own in about five minutes," says one such outfitter.
And what exactly is that flying like? The Sun-Sentinel describes it as weightless "gliding," generally about 15 feet above the water (max 30 feet) at the equivalent of a jog—about 5mph (though it can go as fast as 28mph); both are controlled by the flier. The JetLev R200, which has gotten the OK from the Coast Guard, is the brainchild of Raymond Li, who cites the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball as the source of his inspiration. It's a two-part machine: a floating pod containing a 200-horsepower engine, which connects via 33-foot hose to the jet pack; water streams out of tubes on either side of the pack.
