Mitt Romney's Barber Wants Him to Loosen Up

Michele Bachmann recently described Mitt Romney in a word: “Hair.” She’s not alone—Romney’s stupefyingly perfect coif is a matter of much discussion among political observers. Case in point: The New York Times today has a front-page story on the hair it calls a "cosmetological Rorscharch test on the campaign trail." What we learn from Leon de Magistris, who has styled Romney's hair for about 20 years now and considers it "clean and conservative" rather than "stylish."

• Control: “I will tell him to mess it up a little bit,” says the stylist. “I said to him, ‘Let it be more natural.’” But Romney won't budge; he prefers it "very controlled."
• Au natural: Romney uses no dyes or gels, says de Magistris.
• The Mitt: Other clients at the Boston-area salon ask for the cut by name, usually in whispers: It's The Mitt, of course.
