A novel Russian strategy backfired against the top team in men's tennis today, as America's Mike and Bob Bryan clinched the Davis Cup with a doubles match win in straight sets: 7-6, 6-4, 6-2. Russia hoped that baseliners Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev would foil the Bryans, but Davydenko—currently third in the world in singles on the ATP computer—proved a liability today.

The Americans broke the high-ranked Russian's serve three times, including twice in a lopsided third set. After clinching a record thirty-second Cup, the US has two matches left, and could become the first 5-0 winner since Sweden 10 years ago. Today marked the first time since 1992 that the US has claimed the Cup on home soil. (More tennis stories.)
