Very classy act from a hockey fan in Canada: Someone tossed a banana peel onto the ice as Wayne Simmonds—one of the few black players in the NHL—skated toward the net during a shootout last night, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. The peel landed in the path of the Flyers player, though he still scored on the Red Wings goalie. "I caught it from the side of my eye," Simmonds said. "It was a banana. Hopefully, that wasn't directed towards me being black."
Some of his teammates weren't as charitable after the preseason game in Ontario. "I would have went and kicked that fan's ass myself," said one. "That's just not right." Stadium security didn't catch the person who threw it. League commissioner Gary Bettman condemned the incident today: "The obviously stupid and ignorant action by one individual is in no way representative of our fans or the people of London, Ontario."
