Long Island cops released new information yesterday as they continue to press their hunt for as many as three serial killers who they believe murdered at least eight women, a man in woman's clothing, and a toddler. Five of the victims remain unidentified, and police provided sketches of two of them in the hope that someone will know the victims, which may help lead police to the killer, reports Newsday. Investigators believe the unidentified toddler was the daughter of one of the murdered women, and displayed photos of earrings and bracelets worn by the little girl at a press conference. Five other victims have been identified as prostitutes.
Parts of all 10 of the dismembered victims were found in woods near Gilgo Beach or nearby in Suffolk County since late last year, but the killings stretch back as long ago as 15 years. Investigators believe one killer was responsible for at least four of the deaths, and two others likely killed the rest. The mother of one of the victims said she hopes cops nail her daughter's killer "before he kills many more girls." A police spokesman said investigators are "making progress. It's a slow, methodical process. This is not a television show where everything is solved in an hour." (More crime stories.)
