You thought the birther controversy was over, what with President Obama releasing his long-form Certificate of Live Birth? Well, think again. Arizona’s fiery Sheriff Joe Arpaio has a secret five-member Cold Case Posse looking into the authenticity of said birth certificate, World Net Daily reports. Sheriff Joe explains that he’s just doing his duty: “When I get allegations brought to me by the citizens of Maricopa County, I look into the allegations,” and in this case he got allegations from the Surprise Tea Party of Surprise, Arizona. Seems the Tea Partiers are worried residents’ voting rights will be compromised if the prez uses a forged birth certificate to run for re-election.
Arpaio has a 3,000-member-strong volunteer posse, which he uses for tasks ranging from search and rescue to crime prevention. The Cold Case Posse is a “posse within the posse,” and its members typically have backgrounds in law, law enforcement, or other specialized fields including accounting and forensics. Arpaio has assigned five members, who will be kept anonymous for safety reasons, to investigate the birth certificate under the Cold Case Posse umbrella. Once the investigation is complete, Arpaio explains, he will have the “ultimate authority” to decide how to proceed. None of this is costing taxpayers—the Cold Case Posse is a 501(c)3 organization, and if you want to help fund the investigation, you can donate. (More Joe Arpaio stories.)
