President Obama has always claimed to care about the environment. “But what good is it to say the right thing unless you act on it?” asks actor Robert Redford in the Huffington Post. After some of his administration’s recent decisions—like backing off updated ozone standards and giving preliminary approval to the Keystone XL oil pipeline and Shell’s plans for drilling off Alaska’s North Slope—Redford’s “beginning to wonder just where the man stands.”
In each case, industry lobbyists have employed “the usual mix of fear mongering and lies,” arguing that if forced to comply with tougher regulations, they won’t hire new workers. “Really? American companies can't hire workers unless they're allowed to make our air so dirty our people get sick, miss work and die? That's nonsense,” Redford writes. “This isn’t about jobs; it’s about profits.” Profits are fine, if companies don’t lay waste to the country in the process—which all three projects would do.
