Dominique Strauss-Kahn received a warm welcome during his farewell visit to International Monetary Fund headquarters in Washington, DC, yesterday. Hundreds of staffers packed into an auditorium to hear the former IMF chief speak, Reuters reports. "He is very much appreciated in the institution," Brazil's representative on the IMF's 24-member executive board says. "People clapped for very long periods. "
Strauss-Kahn told IMF staff he had come to "apologize to those who have been hurt" by the scandal and for its negative impact on the institution. He described the American justice system as fair. The Frenchman, who resigned from the IMF in May after being charged with sexual assault, got his passport back a few days ago after the charges against him were dismissed. He has said he "can't wait" to get back to France; moving vans have been spotted outside his DC residence. (More International Monetary Fund stories.)
