President Obama is chilling in swanky Martha's Vineyard this week ... again. And while the Massachusetts hotspot is a vacation destination that has attracted presidents Kennedy and Clinton, Time r uns down a list of other noted places where commanders in chief have gone to unwind:
- Florida White House: Richard Nixon retreated 50 times during his presidency to his Key Biscayne compound. Along with his West Coast version, dubbed Casa Pacifica, the two places were the recipient of some $10.5 million in taxpayer funded upgrades.
- Little White House: The buck would often skip town and stop in Harry Truman's Key West compound during the winter, once on doctor's orders. Favorite pastimes included deep-sea fishing.
- Soldiers' Home: When Abraham Lincoln wanted to take a break, he didn't go far: He and his family stayed at this cottage, located three miles from the White House, during summers—and often into the fall.
- Camp David: Every president since FDR has vacationed at the official presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.
- LBJ Ranch: Lyndon Johnson spent most of his free time at this ranch in central Texas near where he was born, famously calling his foreman daily while president to inquire about the weather.
