House to Vote on Debt Ceiling, Without a Deal

Bipartisan debt ceiling talks are still deadlocked, but the House plans a vote next week anyway, John Boehner announced today. The House will vote on a bill that would raise the debt ceiling $2.4 trillion, while cutting spending by even more than that, CBS reports. It would also cap spending and propose a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget.

"We asked the president to lead," Boehner said. "We asked him to put forward a plan—not a speech, a real plan—and he hasn't. We will." Whatever the House votes on is unlikely to go far, and House leaders said the vote didn't preclude actually reaching a deal. In his press conference today, President Obama predicted the move. "My expectation is you'll probably see the House vote on a couple of things just to make political statements," he said, but it is "not going to be something I would support."
