Jon Stewart was depressed when he returned to the Daily Show after vacation to find the US "broke, unemployed, endlessly deployed." Fortunately, correspondent John Oliver was there to cheer him up—by showing him Britain is worse off. Stewart got progressively more nauseous as he heard about how News of the World hacked into the voicemail of families of dead soldiers, 9/11 victims, and a missing child.
It got worse when Oliver recounted how the tabloid paid off Scotland Yard officers, and that a former editor was even hired by the prime minister. But the worst part, for Oliver at least, was the hero of the whole story: Hugh Grant. "That's right," crowed Oliver, "the guy who got car head from an LA road prostitute is now the moral compass of my nation." (More The Daily Show stories.)
