Something was off about the broadcast of Boston's Fourth of July celebration—a few miles off. CBS aired footage of fireworks exploding behind the State House, Quincy Market, and Fenway Stadium, but astute viewers soon realized such views would have been physically impossible from where the fireworks were launched. Turns out the footage of the locations was shot in May and superimposed below images of the fireworks show, reports the Boston Globe.
The local businessman who produced the show defended the practice because it was for an entertainment, not a news, broadcast. He equated it with scenes from Boston Legal being shot on a sound stage in Hollywood. “Absolutely, we’re proud to show scenes from our city,’’ he says. “We were able to highlight great places in Boston, historical places with direct ties to the Fourth. So we think it was a good thing." CBS has yet to comment. (More Boston stories.)
