Lloyd Carr, the third-winningest coach in Michigan football history, will step down at the end of the season. 2007 was difficult for Carr, whose Wolverines were shocked in a loss to lower division Appalachian State and then battered by Oregon to start the season; later losses to Wisconsin and archrival Ohio State doomed Michigan's Big Ten title hopes.

Still, Carr's track record was largely monumental after inheriting the job as the handpicked successor of mentor Bo Schembechler, with a national title in 1997 and bowl appearances in each of his thirteen years. "This is the right time for Michigan and the right time for me," reflected Carr. Rumors have pinpointed LSU coach and Michigan alum Les Miles as the leading candidate to succeed him.
