Hillary Clinton swears she's done with elected politics, and Reuters thinks it knows where she's headed next: the World Bank. Quoting three unnamed sources, the news service says she has already talked to the White House about leaving her post at the State Department to assume the presidency of the bank next year. The term of current President Robert Zoellick expires in mid-2012. A Clinton spokesperson denies the story.
Reuters thinks the denial is expected because Cinton could ill afford to be seen as a lame duck, which would diminish her clout as secretary of state at a crucial time. The news comes as Christine Lagarde of France vies for the presidency of the IMF. If tradition holds, the World Bank will be run by an American and the IMF by a European. Neither has ever had a female president, but both glass ceilings could be on their way down. (More Hillary Clinton stories.)
