Greenpeace has set its sights on a new eco-villain: Barbie. The group says it has traced packaging used by Mattel and other toy companies to protected Indonesian rainforests, and they’re taking it out on Mattel’s perpetually well-accessorized doll, Reuters reports. Activists dressed like Ken descended on Mattel’s headquarters yesterday, unfurling a giant banner that showed Ken’s face and read, “Barbie, it’s over. I don’t date girls that are into deforestation.”
Greenpeace says it used both forensic testing and “in country” investigations to prove that Mattel, Walt Disney Co., and other toy companies were using packaging from Asia Pulp and Paper, an Indonesian company it accuses of raiding rainforests. APP says it meets the legal requirements of all countries. “We believe it’s irresponsible to play on the emotions of children and their parents to rehash old, discredited allegations,” the company said.
