A North Carolina state lawmaker has received some very personal letters of protest—from his daughter and her third-grade class. GOP Rep. Mike Stone’s daughter asks him to “please put the budget higher, dad” as the state weighs education spending cuts, reports the AP. “Our school doesn’t want to lose” teaching assistants, his daughter writes. Stone is fuming over the effort, in which the school “recruited third-graders to do their bidding,” he tells the Sanford Herald.
“I don’t think we should ask third-graders to get political. Especially when they don’t understand what they’re writing. Especially when it’s my daughter,” Stone says. The kids were told to hit “talking points,” he says. The school superintendent says the letters weren’t inappropriate. “This was just an activity to teach kids writing and they used it as the subject matter.” As for Stone’s daughter: "She thinks she’s done a great thing, and I’m not going to tell her otherwise,” the lawmaker says.
