Beowulf reaped $28.1 million and claimed top spot this weekend in the best debut ever for a digital 3D film, Variety reports. Other newcomers fumbled, as Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium landed fifth and Love in the Time of Cholera banked a sickly $1.9 million in tenth. Sales were down 30% overall from last Thanksgiving weekend, when Happy Feet and Casino Royale made more than $40 million each.
Bee Movie kept buzzing with $14.3 million in second spot, and co-holdover American Gangster shot up $13.2 million in third. Limited entry August Rush filled 80% of 518 theaters yesterday as Nicole Kidman's Margot at the Wedding grossed almost $83,000 on two New York screens. Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men expanded to 148 theaters, grossing $3 million and placing seventh. (More movies stories.)
