Bangladesh Toll Passes 2,200

The death toll in Bangladesh has climbed above 2,200 since Tropical Cyclone Sidr hit the region Thursday, the AP reports. And that number could keep rising as military helicopters, naval ships, and thousands of Bangladeshi troops continue working alongside international aid agencies to rescue victims. But many of the affected areas are difficult to access.

"We will try again on bicycles, and hire local country boats," said one aid worker after failing to make way with larger vehicles. Tropical storms wreak havoc in Bangladesh each year; some damage was averted this time around thanks to early warning signals. Still, 1.5 million inhabitants fled their now-flattened homes, and food shortages and disease could lie ahead. (More natural disaster stories.)
