Gas prices are hurting Americans—and they’re hurting President Obama’s poll numbers, too, a Washington Post/ABC News survey finds. Some 60% of respondents said they are reducing their driving thanks to the prices, while 70% said the prices were causing money woes, the Post reports. Of those who saw gas prices as a “serious financial hardship,” just 39% approved of Obama’s job performance, and only 33% said he was handling the economy well.
Some 60% of independents hammered by gas prices say they definitely won’t be voting for the president in 2012. And when matched with the poll’s leading Republican, Mitt Romney, the president loses a hypothetical election by 24 percentage points among independents struggling with gas prices. Obama has been addressing the issue at recent appearances, and John Boehner has signaled he might be onboard as Obama pushes for cuts to gas and oil industry tax breaks, Politico notes. “Frankly, they’ve got some part of this to blame,” he said.
