Fans Rejoice at Dodgers Takeover

There is general jubilation among Dodgers fans today, after Major League Baseball seized control of the team from wildly unpopular owner Frank McCourt. “Seven years here with the Boston Parking Lot Attendant and the Screaming Meanie, and clueless reporters are asking Dodgers officials Wednesday if this is the darkest day in the organization's history,” writes TJ Simers in the LA Times. “Come on, this is a time to celebrate.”

The fans ESPN talked to agreed. “It’s been a long time coming,” says one longtime season ticket holder. “I don’t think they should’ve been allowed to buy the team in the first place.” But don’t pop any champagne yet. McCourt has signaled that he wants to keep the team, and Bud Selig is expecting a lengthy battle, sources tell the Times. And though MLB control worked out OK for Texas last season, Jonah Keri points out that the league’s stint running the Expos “reminded us why a sports franchise in league hands is a catastrophe waiting to happen.” (More baseball stories.)
