A Green Party of Canada candidate has resigned after word broke that his “favorite quote” on Facebook was listed as, “If rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it!” Alan Saldanha, of Surrey, BC, has said the quote was taken out of context. He says he’d been having a conversation with a friend about the difficulties of life. “Someone had told me that Confucious says, ‘If rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it,’” he said.
Saldanha is still on the most recent Green Party candidates list, the Vancouver Sun reports, but the party has made it clear that he’s persona non grata. “We were absolutely shocked that any such statement existed,” said Green leader Elizabeth May, “and had he not resigned, he would have been removed immediately.” (More Green Party stories.)
