Tough new details are emerging in the story of the 25-year-old mother who killed herself and three of her children by driving a minivan into the Hudson River. It turns out that the lone survivor, 10-year-old Lashaun Armstrong, escaped by opening a power window and climbing out after his mother drove into the water, reports the AP. Earlier reports suggested Lashanda Armstrong had let the child out.

Lashaun then swam to a boat ramp, turned around to look for the vehicle, "and it was gone," say police. A passerby stopped and drove him to a nearby firehouse, reports the Daily News. Rescuers had no chance of saving Armstrong; Landon Pierre, 5; Lance Pierre, 2; and 11-month-old Lainaina Pierre. Armstrong reportedly had an earlier argument with live-in boyfriend Jean Pierre, father of the three dead children. "We're talking about a tragedy in this city that is second to none," said Newburgh Mayor Nick Valentine. (More murder-suicide stories.)
