Have you been dying to get a Kindle, but thought that it was about $25 too expensive? Well, you’re in luck. Amazon today unveiled a $114 version of the Kindle that’s the same as the $139 version except for one crucial difference: You’ll have to put up with ads, which will show up as a screensaver whenever the Kindle is idle, and will appear as a banner on the homepage screen, Bloomberg reports.
“This is about making sure anyone who wants a Kindle can afford one,” said Amazon’s director of Kindle products. “Every time we’ve been able to make the Kindle more affordable, we’ve seen huge growth in demand.” Initial advertisers include Buick, Olay, and Visa. Amazon will also display its own ads, at least until it signs up more paying advertisers. (More Amazon stories.)
