Yemen's president has been waffling on whether, and when, to resign—and yesterday, he scrapped his most recent offer. A week ago, President Ali Abdullah Saleh offered to step down by the end of the year, but his opponents quickly rejected that offer. Yesterday, Saleh formally withdrew it after a meeting with leadership committee members of his Congress Party. The move indicates that the attempt to negotiate a power transfer has failed, the AP notes. (Of course, this isn't the first—nor even the second—time Saleh has reneged on a promise to end his reign.)
