Britons Ask: Were Captives Too Cozy With Iranians?
Faye Turney, 26, left, the only woman amongst the British navy personnel seized by Iran, meets with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, second right, in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday, April 4, 2007. Ahmadinejad announced that his government would release the 15 detained British sailors and marines Wednesday...   (Associated Press)

As the euphoria over the homecoming of the 15 British captives subsides, some Britons are charging that the sailors and marines went overboard in co-operating with their captors. Lt. Gen. Sir Michael Gray tells London’s Daily Mail: "In my days you would have got name, rank and serial number and that would be your lot." He called the saiilors' behavior a "bloody shambles.”

British service personnel are now instructed to play along with captors to survive. Still, the sight of their military enthusiastically joking with Iranian President Ahmed Ahmadinejad led the right-wing Daily Mail to wonder whether drugs slipped into their food could be responsible for such "supine effusions."  The paper also condemns Tony Blair for handing Iran "an enormous propaganda victory."    (More Iran stories.)
