If you're an American looking for a wife and happen to be, well, broke and old, there's no point in looking in Cambodia. Under Cambodian law, it's now illegal for the country's women to marry foreigners who are age 50 and up, or who make less than $30,960 a year. Officials say the intention is to stamp out "fake marriages and human trafficking." There is one loophole: Said couples can bypass the law by getting married outside the country. Over-50 foreign women are free to snag a young Cambodian hubby, adds the AFP.
Writing for Global Post, Patrick Winn notes that Cambodia has made attempts to diminish its reputation as a hub for child brides before; in 2008, authorities briefly banned all foreign marriages. (More Cambodia stories.)
