Billie Gillispie began his career as Kentucky coach the best way possible: with a win. The Wildcats defeated Central Arkansas 67-40.  Walk-on Mark Coury recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while senior Joe Crawford poured in 20 points.

Despite holding Central Arkansas to 20% shooting, limiting them to 5 assists, and forcing 18 turnovers, Gillispie was unsatisfied. "I don't think we understand how important each possession on offense and defense is.  We have to have more effort and we have to have more thoughtful play than we're getting right now."
