New York's Sen. Chuck Schumer is seeking a nationwide ban on a pair of recreational drugs being sold as "bath salts." The Democrat plans to introduce a bill that would outlaw the drugs mephedrone and MPDV, Reuters reports. The substances, already banned in the European Union and three states, are widely available and are used as legal substitutes for cocaine, ecstacy, or amphetamines.
"These so-called bath salts contain ingredients that are nothing more than legally sanctioned narcotics, and they are being sold cheaply to all comers, with no questions asked, at store counters around the country," Schumer warned. "The longer we wait to ban the substance, the greater risk we put our kids in."
