President Obama wrapped up his State of the Union Address tonight—read the full text here, from the Wall Street Journal—a speech in which he called on Americans to set aside partisan squabbles and summon their "stubborn resilience" to meet the nation's challenges, much as the US met the Soviet space challenge decades ago:
- "After investing in better research and education, we didn’t just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs. This is our generation’s Sputnik moment."
- Obama mentioned "Gabby Giffords" early. Her shooting "gave us pause" because "amid all the noise and passions and rancor of our public debate, Tucson reminded us that no matter who we are or where we come from ... we are part of the American family." He did not, however, address gun control.
