Landslides yesterday sent a muddy torrent through the village of San Juan Grijalva in flood-ravaged southern Mexico, burying more than 100 homes. At least 30 people were missing, according to media reports. Rescuers were sheltering some 70 survivors and searching for the rest. "A mountain fell into the river and created a wave that flattened the town," said the governor of Chiapas.
TV reports showed an expanse of jungle swamped by water and mud which was a community of 500 just days ago. The village is close to Tobasco state where some 800,000 people were left homeless last week as floods wiped out homes and fields. Mexican President Felipe Calderon canceled his trip to the Ibero-American summit to attend to the crisis. (More flood stories.)
