Has Apple gotten over its porn hang-up? Hugh Heffner set off a wave of speculation by suggesting as much on Twitter today. “Big news! Playboy—both old & new—will be available on iPad beginning in March,” he tweeted, according to Apple Insider. Playboy already has a censored app, but most are assuming that this apparent full archive wouldn’t all be covered up.
Apple’s app store guidelines of course forbid nudity. “You can download it, your kids can download it. That’s a place we don’t want to go,” Steve Jobs once said. Could this open those floodgates? Maybe. But Hefner didn't actually mention the app store. Playboy already offers its full archive for $300 online, New York points out, so it's possible they've simply found a way to allow iPads to download that treasure trove from their browsers, "allowing Steve Jobs to still maintain his porn-free streak when it comes to apps."
