It's the day after the big night. Which cities are likely waking up with the gnarliest hangovers? By combining stats on average monthly alcohol consumption, binge drinking levels, and number of deaths from alcoholic liver disease, the Daily Beast came up with a list of the 40 drunkest cities ... and notes that they're disproportionally in parts of the US that see coooold winters:
- Milwaukee: Takes the top slot thanks, in part, to the fact that 21.8% of adults here are binge drinkers
- Fargo, ND: To get through these winters, residents have an average of 12.48 drinks per month
- San Francisco: Has the dubious honor of seeing more deaths per 100,000 residents from liver disease than the No. 1 and No. 2 cities, at 6.9 deaths
- Austin: It may have warmer winters, but it edges past Fargo on one front—the average resident has 13.77 drinks per month
- Reno: Even worse when it comes to deaths from liver disease, with 11.9 per 100,000
- Burlington, Vt.: Apres-ski cocktails? Residents here have an average of 12.24 drinks each month
- Omaha: A hefty 19.7% of adults here are binge drinkers
- Boston: Only 1.3 deaths per 100,000 from alcoholic liver disease, but residents here kick back an average of 14.38 drinks a month
