Five artists, 6 months, 250 hours: That’s what went into the new Google doodle that went online today, reports the Wall Street Journal. The goal was to cover holiday celebrations across the planet, and it’s accomplished in 17 interactive panes arranged to make up the logo. It went up this morning and will be there for 2 and a half days.

The original plan was for it to be put up piecemeal over the course of 3 days, ending on Christmas—but Google management reminded chief doodler Micheal Lopez that people may not look at their computers much on Christmas Day. So artists rushed to finish the work on time. It’s the latest of some 900 since 1998. “We want to end the year with a bang,” Lopez said.
